In the vertebrate kingdom, the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) is essential for social interactions and vocalizations. The PAG's dopaminergic innervation is well-established, and this dopaminergic neurotransmission further affects these behaviors. Yet, the potential impact of dopamine on the generation of vocalizations in the periaqueductal gray is not well characterized. The plainfin midshipman fish (Porichthys notatus), a well-characterized model for vocal communication, was used to explore whether dopamine influences vocal production within the periaqueductal gray (PAG). Stimulation of preoptic area/anterior hypothalamus vocal-motor structures evoked vocalizations in midshipmen, which were immediately and reversibly interrupted upon administering focal dopamine injections to the PAG. Dopamine's influence on vocal-motor output did not affect the behavioral parameters of this output, specifically the duration and frequency of vocalizations. Dopamine's ability to quell vocal production was circumvented by a simultaneous blockade of D1- and D2-like receptors, while a blockade of only one receptor type remained ineffective. Our study's results point towards dopamine neuromodulation within the midshipman's PAG potentially inhibiting natural vocalizations in both courtship and/or agonistic social contexts.

Along with this, we also delineate the current obstacles and pathways forward for AI in clinical oncology translation applications. Ultimately, this article seeks to deepen researchers' and clinicians' understanding of AI's function in precision oncology and accelerate AI's acceptance within established cancer treatment guidelines.

EEG recordings were made throughout the presentation of lateralized visual stimuli, enabling an analysis of pre- and post-stimulus brain activity in three groups—LHN patients, lesioned controls, and healthy subjects—thereby fulfilling these purposes.
