This study provides data on the prevalence of OPTC in people from the Marmara region in Turkey. The study includes thyroid glands from 93 male and 15 female cadavers between 18 and 80 years of age. The thyroid glands were removed, fixed and sectioned at 2-mm intervals. The sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and were examined by a single pathologist. A total of 108 thyroid glands were examined. Macroscopic lesions were found in 36 (33.3%) glands (95% confidence interval = 24-42). OPTC was found in four (3.7%) cases (95% confidence interval = 1.0-7.5). It was concluded that in the Turkish people from the Marmara region, the prevalence
of OPTC found at autopsy was relatively low. No age or sex predilection was Selleckchem Dorsomorphin detected. European Journal of Cancer Prevention 20:308-312 (C) 2011 Wolters Kluwer Health vertical bar Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.”
“Oral Diseases (2012) 18, 771777 Objectives: To characterize the global composition of oral fungal populations in frail elderly adults and to investigate the relationship with their health status. Materials and methods: We investigated the fungal populations on the tongue dorsum in 291 institutionalized elderly adults by molecular PCR-based techniques using internal transcribed spacer regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Results: Quantitative PCR analysis showed that fungi were present on the tongue dorsum of 128 subjects at =104 CFU per sample, and
35 of them exceeded 105 CFU per sample. Length heterogeneity-PCR analysis and nucleotide sequence determinations showed that Candida albicans was most frequently detected in those subjects with fungi at =104 CFU www.selleckchem.com/screening-libraries.html per sample (105 subjects), followed by Candida dubliniensis (78), Malassezia restricta (57), and Candida tropicalis (45). Statistical analysis revealed that those subjects with =105 CFU of fungi other than C.similar to albicans per sample had an increased risk of fever (=7 febrile days per 12 months) compared with subjects with <105 CFU per sample, after adjustment for
other fever-associated Selleckchem AG-881 confounding factors. Conclusions: These data demonstrate that the oral cavity of the elderly is inhabited by a diverse array of fungi not limited to typical Candida species and they suggest that the diversity in distribution is associated with health status.”
“Pichia pastoris CBS 2612 behavior under air pressures of 1, 3 and 5 bar in culture media of glycerol (pure and crude) and methanol was studied. Generally, the increase in oxygen transfer rate due to the increase of total pressure improved cellular growth for all carbon sources and for batch and fed-batch processes with different feeding rate strategies. In batch cultures, 1.4-, 1.2-, and 1.5-fold improvement in biomass production was obtained with the increase of air pressure up to 5 bar, using methanol, pure glycerol, and crude glycerol, respectively. The increase of air pressure to 5 bar using exponential feeding rate led to 1.
