Thus, we sought to determine the role of NADPH oxidases in CRLP-stimulated ROS production using the NADPH oxidase inhibitors apocynin, DPI and PAO [39], [40] and [41]. However, none of the inhibitors affected the prolonged CRLP-mediated generation of ROS. Likewise, allopurinol, an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, which has also been implicated in ROS generation in atherosclerosis [42], did not prevent the increase in ROS found in monocytes in response to CRLP. We conclude, therefore, that CRLP do not stimulate ROS production via modification of either NADPH oxidase or xanthine oxidase activity.
