ResultsAt the time of BRCA1/2 test result disclosure, a psychological consultation was proposed by cancer geneticists to 72% and 32% of the carriers (N=232) and noncarriers (N=301), respectively (p<0.001). real utilisation scenario of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in Swiss ICUs has never been reported. Using a survey methodology, we developed a questionnaire sent to the directors of the 79 adult ICUs to identify the perceived pattern of NIV utilisation.

We obtained a response rate of 62%. The overall utilisation rate for NIV was 26% of all mechanical ventilations, but we found significant differences in the utilisation rates among different linguistic areas, ranging from 20% in the German part to 48% in the French part (p < 0.01). NIV was mainly indicated for the acute exacerbations of COPD (AeCOPD), acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema (ACPE) and acute respiratory failure (ARF) in selected do-not-intubate patients.

prepared by grafting of silane onto the backbone of PP in a melt process using a twin-screw extruder and then crosslinking in warm water; an attempt was made to improve the melt strength of PP. “BACKGROUND: Lung transplantation (LTx) remains the best option for selected patients with end-stage lung disease. Long-term survival is hampered by the development of chronic allograft dysfunction, BI-2536 which is the main reason for mortality at 3 to 5 years after LTx. Prevalence of and mortality due to solid-organ tumors also increases and we specifically investigated

the development of primary bronchial carcinoma (BC) and its outcome after LTx.

METHODS: From January 2000 until June 2011, 494 lung and heart lung transplantations were performed. Among Angiogenesis inhibitor this population, 13 patients developed bronchial carcinoma at 41 +/- 27 (mean +/- SD) months after LTx. Of these 13 patients, there were 9 men and 4 women. They were transplanted at a mean age of 59 +/- 2.8 years; 8 patients were transplanted for emphysema and 5 for pulmonary fibrosis.

RESULTS: Nine of 92 single LTx patients (transplanted for emphysema or lung fibrosis) developed a bronchial carcinoma in their native lung, whereas only 4 of 224 bilateral LTx patients (also for emphysema or fibrosis) developed a bronchial carcinoma (p = 0.0026). At diagnosis, 4 patients had local disease (cT1N0M0 and cT2N0M0), whereas all others had locoregionally advanced or metastatic disease. Five patients were surgically treated; however, 1 had unforeseen N2 disease with additional pleural metastasis at surgery. The aim of this study is to determine the Th I and Th2 cytokine and chemokine profiles in serum and exhaled breath condensate (EBC) in lung transplant recipients and to assess their usefulness as biomarkers to predict the development of BUS.

“Multiple infections have been linked with the development of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) post-lung transplantation. Lung allograft airway colonization by Aspergillus species is common among lung transplant recipients. We hypothesized that Aspergillus colonization may promote the development of BOS and may decrease survival post-lung transplantation. We reviewed all lung transplant recipients transplanted in our center between January 2000 and June 2006. Bronchoscopy was performed according to a surveillance protocol and when clinically indicated.

A multivariate analysis performed on variables selected from univariate analysis

demonstrated no significant risk factor. The 10-year disease-specific survival for 3 different patient groups (group 1, 2, and 3) was 100%, 100%, and 83.1%, respectively, and patients in more clinically advanced group demonstrated poorer prognosis (p < 0.001). The 10-year overall survival rate for the 3 patient groups was 93.9%, 100%, and 92%, respectively, and clinically advanced groups tended to show poorer overall survival rate as well (p = 0.046).

Discussion: A more aggressive and extensive surgery, as well as closer follow up, is to be required when operating on patients with tumor size greater than 2 cm, multifocality, clinical apparent lymph node metastasis. “Background. HeartSCORE is a tool for assessing cardiovascular risk, basing its estimates on the relative weight of conventional cardiovascular risk factors. However, new markers of cardiovascular risk have been identified, such as aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV). The purpose of this study was to evaluate to what extent the incorporation of PWV in HeartSCORE increases its discriminative power of major cardiovascular events (MACE). Methods and results. cohort, multicenter and observational study involving 2200 individuals of Portuguese nationality (1290 men and 910 women) aged between 18 and 91 years (mean 46.33 +/- 13.76 years), with annual measurements of PWV (Complior). Only participants above 35 years old were included in the present re-analysis, resulting in a population of 1709 participants. All MACE – death, cerebrovascular accident, coronary accidents (coronary heart disease), peripheral arterial disease and renal failure – were recorded. During a mean follow-up period of 21.42 +/- 10.76 months, there were 47 non-fatal MACE (2.1% of the sample). Cardiovascular risk was estimated in all patients based on the HeartSCORE risk factors. For the analysis, the refitted HeartSCORE and PWV were divided into three risk categories.
